There will be a public meeting regarding the Fifi Island Restoration Project on Thursday August 17, 2023 from 11am-12pm at the Grand Isle Multiplex Center at 3101 LA-1, Grand Isle.

Notice:
Notice of Public Engagement meeting for GIILD’s Fifi Island Restoration Project.  The purpose of this meeting is to gather public input on potential project features and community knowledge of Fifi Island during this early design stage.

Project description:
Fifi Island has experienced significant land loss from storms, subsidence, and wave erosion, with estimates of 1.21% annual land loss since 1984 (USGS).  Previous restoration projects for Fifi Island starting in the early 2000s include marsh creation and rock dike installation from Louisiana’s Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority (CPRA) as well as beneficial use of Bayou Rigaud dredge material from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE). The Grand Isle Independent Levee District (GIILD) received 2022 funding for preliminary design for the Fifi Island Restoration project through the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF). Project goals are to increase hurricane protection for Grand Isle and enhancing habitat for fish and migratory and residential birds. The project will create and nourish up to 371 acres of marsh on Fifi Island and aims to repair/install rock dikes to helped preserve the newly created marsh.
