The Grand Isle Archive

The Grand Isle Archive Project is an attempt to gather and preserve the history of Louisiana’s only inhabited barrier island. From articles to photos and maps, we are preserving the long history of Grand Isle and making it available for others to enjoy. If you have something to contribute, please e-mail Louise LaFont at townofgrandisle@gmail.com.

Grand Isle Photos

Grand Isle has attracted photographers to capture the island’s unique culture and wildlife. The most famous photographer was Fonville Winans, who started his career as a professional photographer in the late 1930’s and for over fifty years traveled South Louisiana photographing the people and places of the diverse bayou state. One of his favorite places was Grand Isle.
