2. 48 Hours on Island Time
Two days. No rush. Welcome to Grand Isle.
Friday Evening: Make the drive down Highway 1 and watch the landscape change from bayous and marshes to open water. Check into your camp, vacation rental, or other lodging and start the weekend with dinner and a Grand Isle sunset.
Saturday: Wake up early for a beach walk before spending the morning your way—book a fishing charter, rent a kayak, explore Grand Isle State Park, or claim your spot on the beach. Grab fresh seafood for lunch, then spend the afternoon exploring the island or simply relaxing. Finish the day with dinner and another sunset.
Sunday: Slow down before heading home. Walk one of Grand Isle’s birding areas, grab breakfast, take one last trip to the beach, and enjoy the coastal scenery before making your way back up Highway 1.
Make It Your Own: Add a fishing charter, kayak trip, birding excursion, seafood stop, or seasonal event.
3. Grand Isle for Anglers
Come where Louisiana comes to fish.
Grand Isle has been a destination for fishermen for generations, and whether you’re an experienced angler or picking up a rod for the first time, there are plenty of ways to get on the water.
Book a Charter: Head offshore for bigger Gulf species or fish the bays, passes, and marshes surrounding the island for speckled trout, redfish, flounder, and more.
Fish From Shore: You don’t need a boat to fish Grand Isle. Cast from the beach, try one of the island’s fishing piers, or spend the morning surf fishing as the sun comes up.

Grand Isle sits along one of North America’s great migratory pathways. Each spring, birds completing the long journey across the Gulf of Mexico arrive on the island looking for food and shelter, making Grand Isle one of Louisiana’s special birding destinations.
Start early along the Grand Isle Birding Trail and explore the island’s chenier forests—elevated ridges where live oaks and other vegetation provide critical habitat for migrating birds.
Continue to Grand Isle State Park and other coastal habitats to look for shorebirds and seabirds. Then explore Elmer’s Island, where beach, marsh, and Gulf habitats provide another completely different birding experience.

6. Family Weekend on Grand Isle
Sometimes the best family memories are the simplest ones.
Pack the fishing poles, sunscreen, beach chairs, and ice chest and head down Highway 1 for an easy weekend by the Gulf.
Spend Saturday morning at the beach building sandcastles, searching for shells, swimming, or introducing the kids to fishing. Visit Grand Isle State Park, try crabbing or fishing from a pier, and stop for lunch at a local restaurant.
Keep the afternoon simple—ice cream or a treat, another trip to the beach, a bike ride, or some downtime at the camp. Pick up fresh seafood for dinner or let one of the island’s restaurants do the cooking.
